The Good, the Bad, the Ugly of Major League Baseball
By Kaylyn Thornal, Contributing Writer
1. Too good! Seattle Mariner’s Felix Hernandez threw a perfect game yesterday against the Tampa Bay Rays to claim the first perfect game in Mariner’s history, and 23rd in baseball history.
2. Too good to be true. Melky Cabrera is suspended 50 games for doping charges. This comes in the middle of a break out who was hitting .347 and will no doubt be a big blow for San Francisco Giant’s Fans and merchandise makers abound.
3. Collapse-a-thon. Catcher Kelly Shoppach, after his trade to the Mets tells the press, “I think — and maybe this is as far as I’ll go with it, too — there is a disconnect in communication between the players through the upper management.” Apparently there is a a disconnect between Carl Crawford and his glove. After Aaron Cook blows a 5 inning no hitter on an error throw-out to Mike Aviles that sails into center field, Cook is removed from the game. Next batter, Carl Crawford watches a 2 run double sail over his head. And of course the press rails on him: “What did it look like? Because I didn’t catch it, I know that,” said Crawford, who didn’t so much as raise his glove. “You can just write whatever y’all want about that. It was just a tough play in my mind. I don’t think I could’ve made that catch, to be honest with you.” No one really is having any fun out there in Boston. What a mess.
