More Juice in San Fran, and 2 No.1 Teams get Sweeped

Here’s todays Sports Daily Top 3 for August 23, 2012

1. Could’ve been a contender. Bartolo Colon has been issued a 50 day suspension for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs. The 39 year old Cy Young winner has been struggling with injuries and has only played in 40+ games since the Cy Young win with the Los Angeles Angels in 2005. Since then, Colon has bounced from team to team, and didn’t play at all in 2010. That year he had stem cell surgery on his elbow in the Dominican Republic, which usually requires human growth hormone, although the surgeon claims he did not use it in Colon’s case. He was later picked up by the Yankees and earned a spot in the starting rotation. This year he has been a staple in a good  line up going 10 – 9, and this will be a tough hit on a team that’s a playoff contender.

2. Sweep! When the Dodgers came into this series things looked promising. They had won 7 of their last 10 and sat atop the NL West. That didn’t last long, as the San Francisco Giants came into Los Angeles with a mission – to confuse the Dodger’s lineup and silence their bats. Mission accomplished. In the first 2 games of the series Giants pitching kept the Dodgers to only 1 run. The Giants reclaim the No. 1 spot in the home stretch toward the playoffs. The teams meet again at the end of September.

3. Calm down, don’t panic. The White Sox swept the Yankees in the South Side of Chicago yesterday, leaving the Yanks only 3 games ahead in first place with potentially no chance at a Wild Card spot. Chicago pitcher Chris Sale, struck out 13 and his pitches had movement that were even perplexing to his catcher. “One cuts, one sinks, one goes straight. It’s just kind of a guessing game for me out there also,” said catcher A.J. Pierzynski. Sox win 2-1.
